Garment District

In its heyday in the 1950s, the Garment District was a marvel to walk around. The sidewalks were filled with workers pushing racks of clothes. This NYC neighborhood’s history actually began some hundred year prior when ready-made garments became increasingly in demand (American Civil War reached its pinnacle and many of the uniforms were produced in the Garment District. By the end of the war, the area became a fashion giant.) That very nostalgia may be behind the neighborhood’s transformation into the fashion capital of the world, with more than $9 billion in annual sales produced in this nestle of the city. Garment District has few low-rise residential buildings, but is dotted with former garment office buildings that have since been converted to residential lofts. Among the historical art deco buildings are the famed New Yorker Hotel and Fashion Tower. This dense and small neighborhood stretches from 5th Avenue to the east to the 9th Avenue to the west; and from 34th Street in the south to 42nd Street to the north.
